the Big P(odunk)

from dictonary.com:
Podunk  /–noun
any small and insignificant or inaccessible town or village
[Origin: 1660–70, American; generic use of Podunk, village near Hartford, Conn.]
Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.0.1)Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.

clearly these people are referring to the site of the Big E. for the non-new englanders out there, the Big E is a giant country fair that lasts most of the month of september. we used to go when we were little kids- when things like cows and dodgy convict-operated rides were our allotted yearly intake of glitz and glam. it had been many years since i had gone, but this year my mum (who is finally feeling a little better) really wanted to go. and is anyone going to argue with a mum that has been through everything she's dealt with the past few months? i think not.

so j.mo and i headed off into the great beyond that is the western half of the state a couple of fridays ago. as we sat sandwiched betweened suv's in bumper to bumper traffic, the faint smell of manure in the air, it started to become clear what we were in for. a good ol' fashioned podunkfest. it might have been the woman knitting in the passenger seat of the tank behind us... or maybe it was the anti-gay marriage jesusfreaks standing by the entrance to the parking lot in all their denim-on-denim glory that gave it away. call me crazy, but things started to sour faster than a pint of straight-from-the-cow's-teat-left-out-in-the-sun-official-beverage-of-the-big-E before we even got started. poor j.mo- he had no idea what he was in for.

after trekking across the rv-peppered parking lot and bypassing the guy in the patriotic balloon hat we were in. the air was heavy with the scent of fried everything, most of it stuck onto skewer sticks. in fact, many of the people also seemed to have been battered and fried. it was a fine assembly of small-town americana. a clusterfuck of airbrushed t-shirts, army pants w/heels, mullets, kids on leashes and us, the two gay vegans from the city. i think the part that scared me most was how close all this was happening to home. i was also a little scared of the huge bbq turkey legs.

let's see some pics...

that's right- 'home' of the denim shirt:

and for those who hadn't seen enough pork-on-parade:

and these were everywhere... for those who would normally just go straight from goatstrokin at the petting zoo to fried dough:

shortly after all of this john retreated to his dark place and refused food and water the rest of the day. i think he still may be recovering. i have to say, though- the day wasn't a complete wash... my parents were having a good time and my sister and nephew showed up later in the day too. and i know that just being together was what my parents wanted, so mission accomplished. we got to play a few games with my nephew and risked life and limb on a couple of rides.

by far the higlight of the day was when my dad (affectionately known as big g) walked up to a rather large woman selling cowboy hats and belts. she was wearing a raccoon hat and D-lux silkscreened t shirt featuring a wolf and waterfall scene au natural.

here's exactly what he said, no joke:

' you know something-? you look just like that wolf on your t shirt.' he then scurried off and did a little dick-van-dyke-jump-up-in-the-air-and-click-your-heels-together-routine. it was the most fabulous thing we saw all day.

so that was the trauma that was the big E... forever renamed the big P(odunk). needless to say, we won't be returning.

otherwise, things have been good- just super busy. school is in full swing and i've got more groupwork and projects than i can shake a cattle prod at. somewhere in there we also had froggie and avery come to town, which was so much fun:

and this past weekend we went back out to western massachusetts (gasp!) and enjoyed a lovely new england autumn day of hiking and cider donuts and lesbian watching in northampton. we did have a moment of uncomfortable silence as we passed the exit to the big E and both re-lived a few moments of sheer terror as flashbacks of corndogs and spandex and salsa makers with 'samuri blades' streaked by.

alrighty- that's all i've got for now. hope everyone is doing well :)(:

spacejunk & a friendly coup

how lame is nasa?

apparently there are bits and pieces of things resembling moonpie wrappers and cans of scientologist ashes that were blasted into space floating around the shuttle... they're trying to figure out a) what exactly these pieces of junk are and b) if they fell off the shuttle:

'A second mystery object was spotted midday Tuesday and photographed by astronaut Dan Burbank. Jett said the object looked like a picture hanging clip. But it may be a garbage bag...'

Or a garbage bag:

It's a fine line. so easily confused- I can see why their heads are spinning.

topping other news today... there's a military coup happening in thailand at the moment. when i heard the news yesterday i sent an email to my friends in bangkok asking if they were all ok etc. but after reading the news this morning and hearing back from them it seems i was alarmed for no reason- coups in thailand are like a big non-violent political soap opera. the military waits for the prime minister to leave town and they just kinda drive around in their tanks and tell the king not to worry. a little 'as the coup d'etat turns, thai style' the funniest thing in all this was when one of my thai friends mentioned the most exciting part of the entire cirque de coup was seeing a steady stream of hot thai soldiers parading past his apartment. and to think i was worried about happenings ;)

a-buh-bye

what am i saying goodbye to? that would be my free time. now that the lovely labor day long weekend is over that means school starts again. in fact, it starts tomorrow :(

one class sounds perfect for me: international student advising

the other sounds like an extended session of watching that guy clip his nails on the T a few months back: conceptualizing intercultural relations

i also have a 90minute french exam coming up next week. i started reviewing over the weekend so i don't get my plus-que-parfaits mixed up with my reflexives. so needless to say, things are about to get very busy again. sometimes that's how i work best, though- way too much going on and not much time to get things done.

and some other times it just makes me crazy. fasten your seatbelt, j.mo...

but 18 sessions of chemo since the beginning of may will do that you, i suppose. all things considered, i think she's doing amazingly well and looks awesome.

in a few weeks she has a dr's appointment to check and see if the treatment worked. fingahs, toes and eyes crossed. in the meantime, here's to one of the strongest people i've ever met. i'm so proud of all the hard work you've done, mum... and i sure do love you :)

home again, home again

it was a pretty uneventful day of traveling on my way back to boston today. i did get upgraded to bidness class from merida to houston since the flight was oversold, so that was a nice little early am surprise. the only other excitement during the trek home involved the bat that was flying around the baggage claim area in terminal C. yes, a real bat. good thing the national guard is on hand at the moment to control the ensuing rabies-tainted chaos.

so here are the highlights from the pics:

vino blanco

last night luis (the guy who runs the office down here) took us to his house on the beach to enjoy the sunset and hang out with his family and friends.

it was an amazing night- so beautiful out and so much fun. worth every dull aching moment of today's hangover ;)

a few pics for you... thankfully they were taken before our sabadogigantefleshwounds erupted, courtesy of the highoctane mosquitos which abound. yes, even at the beach.

today was the end of training- it was supposed to last until tomorrow, but we finished up a little early. so tonight we're all going out for dinner and i'm sure tomorrow i'll be walking around in a 2 day hangover fog. kristin and i are leaving in the morning to visit chichin itza (mayan ruins) so it should be a fun day. besides, nothing cures a hangover like trekking around ancient ruins under the blazing sun with our livers in our backpacks.

and then it's back to boston on sunday. i'll post more pics as soon as i get back.

6p tortillas and salsa

and then it was my favorite part of the day. 6pm es tiempo para tortillas, salsa y cerveza. the work day is over and dinner is at least 3 hours away, so that all leads to a whole lotta snacking...

i'm the wickidsmaht one who brought the laptop and digital camera thinking i would take pics and blog every day. except i forgot the usb cable for the digital camera. so any and all visual aids are on you until i get back to boston. carry on.

merida has been good so far. it's nice to be bonding with the new coworkers and being eaten alive by the mosquitos *inside* the office. i've taken to rubbing my limbs in local no-name tequila... takes care of mosquitoes and has also removed all that unwanted bodyhair. now that's one stop shopping.

last night we ate at this place called 'india bar.' so i get all worked up into a chickpealather during the day at the thought of indian food that night. we arrive to find the place bursting with all things bhindi decor... excellent, excellent. sit down, order bears... open menus- not a single item of indian food to be found. chinese- of course. italian, why not? and mexican- naturally. but sadly, not a chaana nor a bharta to be found. i think i've officially eaten 20lbs of avocado by now.

i did have time to check in at cnn.com and boston.com today and was happy to see it was an eventful day of happenings up north. :

in the news-
3 new planets

182 people on a united flight diverted en route from london to DC due to 1 bathroom frequenting crazy with hand cream and a pack of matches

and 1 dead mystery beast in maine

with all that news i hope there was still time for traffic and weather ;)

alrighty- time to get ready for dinner.

flydry

mornin'

i'm just about packed up and ready to head off to merida again. my flight is at 1.30p today, so i've decided to leave the house 3 hours early in preparation for the cirque de securite. i've been drinking water non stop this morning. and i also ate a whole stick of chapstick, since i'm about to be cut off from the gel-like comfort i treasure most.

i'm still not convinced that my chapped lips are an issue of national security, but i guess i'll just roll with it today.

i'm brining the laptop to merida this time, so hopefully i'll have some time for bloggin' in the evenings... stay tuned.

otherwise, no huge news- it was a lovely weekend. j.mo and i had a proper date-night and saw a movie (quinceanera) and had awesome food at border cafe. i think i ate my weight in chips'n'guac. we also got to hang out with maggie and jon, recently returned from the UK.

oh yeah- and friday night with froggie and throwing muses was awesome. it was the perfect weekend for all these happenings- lovely and warm. froggie and i walked all the way from cambridge to dorchester after the show on friday night. bliss!

i'm off- hope everyone has a good monday.

biglove,
g

a perfect day in boston on friday

classic

so after a long monday at work it was time for an hour of jogging... and then a shower... and then the classiest post-workout snack ever. i mean evuh:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
nothing says class quite like the one and only classic lays potato chips. and champagne. with ice in it.

gatorade is for amateurs.
(true story)

it's been another impressive 'more-than-a-week-sans-blog.' but i do have pictures to post, so hopefully that counts for something. mexico was good, just a little short. which is fine because i'm on my way down again a week from today- and this time for a whole week.

first stop was texas where everything for sale at the airport reminds all us homos and/or yanks to just keep on movin':
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

then there was merida. lovely yucatan city not near the beach: translated as it's not near the 1000's of alabamians currently on vacation in can-koon.

and my new favorite meal- panuchos... thin corn tortialls with a layer of beans in the middle, fried. then topped with fresh avocado, lettuce, tomato and surprisingly yumma pickled onions and served with a flaming hot habanero sauce:

so monday i'm flying back to run the actual training class for a week.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

things are busy with a myriad of other stuff- j.mo's still illin', a boozecruise on the harbor tomorrow, the butter queen and good dr return home (finally!) on friday and thursday night my much loved and not all that often seen froggie is coming to town and i'm taking the day off so we can be beach bums and then see throwing muses that night. and maybe we'll lick the spoon.
